Welcome to this module. We are very much looking forward to inspiring you, as we work together through the material.
In summary, the module explores the scientific basis of the global challenge that is climate change, and how we might begin to mitigate it, and its effects, on the Earth. Fundamental principles of climate and Earth science are
introduced, including the Earth’s energy budget, the greenhouse effect and the global carbon cycle. Building on these principles, the evidence of a changing climate is examined, ranging from increases in air temperature and sea level rise, to more frequent climate extremes and hazardous weather phenomena. With this knowledge, students will begin to assess the prospects of effective solutions to mitigate the effects in future.Module learning objectives:
• To understand the evidence for, and causes of, climate change and how human activity has, and is, driving it
• To comprehend climate and Earth science concepts such as the global energy budget and the greenhouse effect, and how various sources of carbon contribute to the overall effect (energy production, transportation, agriculture, deforestation)
• To assess the effect of climate change on the natural and human environment
• To critically appreciate climate change policies, greenhouse-gas emissions reduction strategies and possible adaptation requirements
• To evaluate current and emerging strategies -
